3/13/09-A bill has died that sought to charge individuals with “driving while distracted” if they are talking on a mobile communication device, including a CB radio, and get in a wreck.
Sponsored by Rep. Mary Margaret Oliver, D-Decatur, HB19 remained in the House Motor Vehicles Committee at the deadline to advance from the chamber, effectively killing it for the year.
The bill would have fined offenders up to $500 if they cause a wreck while chatting. Truckers and others also would have faced a loss of one point on their driver’s licenses.
