5/6/09-An effort has died that urged the federal government to extend the freeze on increases of size and weights of commercial motor vehicles throughout the U.S.
Sponsored by Rep. Bill Proctor, R-St. Augustine, House Memorial 1073 encouraged the U.S. Congress to make sure larger trucks are not allowed on the nation’s interstates.
Congress will be considering the reauthorization of the multibillion-dollar transportation funding bill this year, and attempts to challenge the current federal truck size and weight limits are expected.
Proctor wrote in the memorial that “federal and state studies have found that increasing the size and weight of commercial motor vehicles may accelerate the deterioration of bridges.”
He also pointed out that the Federal Highway Administration has classified 1,994 bridges in Florida to be structurally deficient or functionally obsolete.
The legislative effort was nonbinding. If it had been approved by the Florida Legislature, copies of the memorial would have been sent to President Obama, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, and to each member of the Florida delegation to the U.S. Congress.
A similar Senate version – SM1568 – also died.
