8/6/08-A bill in the House Transportation Committee would authorize counties to apply an additional tax on vehicle registration fees. Local voter approval would be required for passage.
Sponsored by Rep. Pam Byrnes, D-Lyndon Township, HB6325 would authorize the surtax to be as much as 20 percent of the state tax on a vehicle. Revenue collected must be solely for road work, public transit, rail service and landscaping.
