6/16/08-The House Transportation Committee approved a bill that would prohibit points from being added to the driver’s licenses of people found to be in violation of proposed rules to prohibit the use of hand-held cell phones and text messaging devices.
Sponsored by Rep. Michael Sak, D-Grand Rapids, HB5396 also would mandate that violations are enforced solely as a secondary offense – meaning a person would have to be pulled over for another violation, such as speeding, before they could be ticketed for breaking the rule.
The bill is awaiting consideration on the House floor. If approved there, it would advance to the Senate for further consideration.
